Free Pattern Friday – Citron Shawl, Eco+ Cable Blanket December 30, 2011 – Posted in: Free Pattern Fridays, Project Ideas

On the heels of my green Cladonia, picks for this week’s free patterns are both featured in my favourite hue-of-the-moment. The Citron by Hilary Smith Callis is a simple half-circle shawl and the Eco+ Quilt and Cable Blanket from Cascade Yarns is a cozy throw perfect for winter hibernation.  Although the blanket may look intimidating to some, the pattern notes assure that this is, in fact, a very straightforward project. It uses just four skeins of Cascade Eco Wool/ Eco+ making it a highly affordable afghan in all-natural fibers. I love the modern yet rustic look of this blanket and have added it to my growing queue of projects for 2012 – now to find the time!

The elegance and versatility of the Citron have made it an extremely popular project on Ravelry over the last few years (8541 posted projects and counting). It can be worn as both a shawl and a scarf depending on your mood and works beautifully in a range of fibers and yarn weights. To achieve a denser look, we knit up a store sample in Blue Sky Alpacas Alpaca Silk but the options are endless. A few are shown below – from L to R: Handmaiden Fine Yarns Mini Maiden, Rowan Kidsilk Haze Stripe, and SweetGeorgia Yarns Merino Silk Lace. All of these yarns are available in-store.

Happy knitting and Happy New Year!  May all your fiber dreams and knitting goals be met in 2012!
