One happy FO August 13, 2012 – Posted in: Mondays with Mona

Hi there – I am back after a week’s hiatus. That gave me enough time to finish my design. I am quite happy with it – though I am not sure if I am really done. There might be some embroidery in the future, for now I have to let it rest and maybe think about it some more until inspiration strikes again. I worked an A-line body, with four sets of decreases done in…

Hiccups along the way July 30, 2012 – Posted in: Mondays with Mona

True to my motto “let’s do this and see what happens” I calculated how many stitches I would have to cast on and pretty much realized right away that the 1.5 times the number would be WAY too big. I went down to 1.3 times the amount and got started. To avoid that pesky flipping up of the border, I used 2.75 needles (in this case three sizes smaller than the working needles) and it…

And now for something completely different July 23, 2012 – Posted in: Mondays with Mona

If anyone asks me what I am doing for a living, I’d have to say “I work in a yarn store”. I’d have to say that because that is the part of my work that actually supports me financially. Another part of my “work” is designing knit wear. Now, I’ll have to admit that I haven’t been churning out the patterns lately because I am working in a yarn store that supports me financially and…

Helpful in oh so many ways July 16, 2012 – Posted in: Mondays with Mona

Whenever I think about what makes knitting ‘easier’ – be it knitting a certain pattern, casting on a lot of stitches, follow up with what you have been doing, keeping track of rows – I find that stitch markers are an essential tool. I have a lot of them. I use them all the time. We distinguish ring stitch markers and split stitch markers. Let’s talk about the ring markers first: They come in all…

Big needles, quick knit July 9, 2012 – Posted in: Mondays with Mona

When the latest Knit.Wear came in, I was very impressed, they had me with the model on the front page. I was not alone, the 10 copies flew off the shelf, I do believe we have ordered more, though! Very unexpectedly (a late night browsing on ravelry did it) I was intrigued by another design, the Capelet Tank by Cathy Carron. I bought four skeins of Allhemp6 LUX and started Tuesday night as soon as…

Buttons, buttons, so many choices July 2, 2012 – Posted in: How to, Mondays with Mona

If you have ever knit a cardigan, be it for yourself or someone else, you know you had to buy buttons to go with it. That is, the traditional cardi asks for buttons, and that is what I am talking about. I love picking buttons for my knitted things. Sometimes I even pick the buttons first and then decide what to knit to go with them. The choice of buttons can be overwhelming, but I…

Good things come to those who wait – sometimes June 25, 2012 – Posted in: Mondays with Mona

About exactly two years ago just after the store opened (really, it’s been two years?!) I ‘met’ Handmaiden Mini Maiden at Espace Tricot for the first time. Since then I have been wanting to knit with that yarn – I just never came across the right pattern, so I put off buying it. Enter Kieran Foley with his “Camino Bubbles”. And Mini Maiden in colour “Safari”. Wham Bam. A match made in heaven – at…

Out with the old… June 18, 2012 – Posted in: Mondays with Mona

I’m sitting here with my coffee while the contractor is plastering the walls in the kitchen, dining room and hallway. There’s sanding involved and lots of dust everywhere – somehow this is worse than ripping out the kitchen itself and replacing it. Anyone having gone through a reno knows though, so I won’t bore you with my unneeded complaints. The kitchen itself is pretty much done – I even got a new range because the…

Crochet Confessions June 11, 2012 – Posted in: Mondays with Mona

I consider myself a knitter through and through. Ever once in a while though there is the urge to crochet. I see a project on ravelry that really speaks to me and inspires me so I want to get the hook out and get started. While I do think I am a good knitter, the crochet thing is very dependent on a well written pattern and my grip on the technique, which is way less…

Counting, counting, numbers are for counting June 4, 2012 – Posted in: Mondays with Mona

Hello MWM readers! I just came home from a two day marathon of counting – inventory at Espace Tricot, together with Lisa, Melissa, Odette, Sarah and Angie – and a bit of help of Sean, Lisa’s husband, also. I am done, but Lisa and Melissa are still finishing up. That’s why there is no ‘real’ blog post today, but just me explaining while there was none last week either, as you might have realized. I…
